What is speech therapy?

According to ASHA, speech therapy, or speech-language pathology, is a service that aims to improve a person's ability to communicate and swallow. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with people of all ages to treat various disorders.

According to ASHA, feeding therapy is a process that helps children with feeding or swallowing disorders.

To initiate services for your child, complete the Reach Out form on our website or call us. Our team will guide you through the process, starting with gathering the necessary information for a referral from your doctor's office. Some insurance plans may require a recent visit to the pediatrician, or physicians may prefer to see your child for a visit before providing the referral. During this visit, you can express your interest in your child receiving services with 7 Sunny Days Bilingual Therapy. We will then work with you to schedule an initial assessment and discuss the next steps.

Children can receive speech therapy outside of school through private clinics or practices. There, they can access additional therapy sessions beyond what their school district provides if needed; this is often called "private speech therapy" or "outpatient therapy."

7 Sunny Days Bilingual Therapy is equipped to treat children from birth to 20 years of age.

If your child has received a speech or language disorder diagnosis, then yes, they should see a speech therapist.
However, if they seem to be falling behind in their development, bringing them in for a speech therapy assessment is a good idea. We’ll let you know whether or not they need speech therapy.

Since all treatment is individualized, your child's specific needs will determine the duration and frequency of treatment. This personalized approach ensures your child's unique needs are met, giving you peace of mind about their progress and a sense of reassurance that we understand and cater to your child's specific needs.

We love it when parents ask questions about speech and language support at home! To help with the generalization of skills, we recommend a few activities.
  • Read picture books together and ask simple questions along the way.
  • Gently correct and model accurate speech sound production.
  • Break down more extended directions and have the child repeat steps back.
  • Play turn-taking games together.
  • Review any activities completed in speech and language.

No! We understand that speaking two languages can concern parents regarding speech and language development. However, research shows that speaking two languages at home does not negatively impact speech and language development.
For more information, see the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recommendations on learning more than one language.

Yes, we provide bilingual services with Spanish-speaking office staff and therapists. You can trust that our bilingual services are effective and will cater to your child's specific needs, giving you confidence in our ability to support your child's development.

The amount of time it takes to address a speech or language disorder varies from person to person. Some factors include age, severity, type of issue, willingness to stick with the treatment plan and family involvement. Your speech therapist will give you an estimate of how long they believe the treatment will take, ensuring you are prepared and informed about the process.

Speech therapy sessions are usually scheduled for 30 minutes.

Feeding therapy sessions are usually scheduled for 30-38 minutes.

Many children have better speech therapy results when working with a speech therapist alone. If that's the case with your child, you may be invited to the session at its beginning and end to understand better its goals and how you can help.

Every child is different, so every child needs a unique approach to speech therapy. Speech therapists use mostly play-based interventions for young children because they lack attention span or cognitive skills. Additionally, research shows that children learn best through play.
These sorts of play-based interventions may include:
  • Talking and playing
  • Using games to encourage your child's participation and follow commands.
  • Using books or pictures to stimulate language.
  • Practicing how to create proper sounds
  • Helping you, as the child's primary caregiver, to understand how you can help
We use a combination of these play-based interventions and table-based strategies for older children. We aim to help your child and ensure their sessions are fun.
